¿Trinity o Cambridge?
Si vamos más allá del debate acerca de cuál es más reconocido, y dejamos aparte la miríada de exámenes también muy bien conocidos fuera de Europa, como el TOEFL y el IELTS, podremos examinar de cerca algunas de las diferencias entre los que parecen en mayor auge en nuestra soleada Valencia: los exámenes de Trinity y de Cambrige.
Los exámenes de Cambridge, en los cuales se incluyen el PET y el FCE, son los más populares en las escuelas; todo el mundo quiere uno. Trinity es la última moda, poco convencional, que tiene un público más pequeño, pero acérrimo. En primer lugar ambos están reconocidos en toda Europa y más allá, y los títulos otorgados se suponen para toda la vida. Añadimos “se supone” porque es posible que al requerir un puesto de trabajo, sus potenciales jefes les requieran algún título actualizado si el que obtuvieron fue años atrás, durante el Renacimiento. Más allá de eso, ¿qué necesitas saber?
Los exámenes ISE (Integrated Skills in English) de Trinity tienen varios niveles, los correspondientes al ISE I y II son los equivalents al PET y el FCE de Cambridge. Lo que a su vez serían los niveles B1 y B2 respectivamente, los más reclamados en España en estos momentos.
Ambos tipos de exámenes evalúan diferentes habilidades como la escritura, la lectura, la oralidad y la escucha, y por supuesto, la temida gramática. Sin embargo, los de Cambridge son más largos, especialmente en el nivel B2, y en los posteriores niveles (el C1 y el C2) hay mayor prioridad en la gramática integrada y las destrezas auditivas. En el FCE hay 4 partes de gramática y la misma cantidad de listenings; mientras en el ISE II no hay listenings específicos o secciones gramaticales propiamente dichas, ya que estas capacidades se evalúan conjuntamente con las partes del test correspondientes al writing y speaking. En los niveles más altos del ISE sí hay asignados listenings.
Al mismo tiempo, Trinity parece tener un mayor énfasis en las funciones escritas y conversacionales. En el grado ISE II se espera que los estudiantes completen 3 redacciones (portfolios) que previamente realizan en casa, y más tarde dos partes de examen escrito. Adicionalmente, con los exámenes ISE has de preparar un tema de discusión que dará pie a una larga conversación con el examinador. Además de las diferencias en la longitud, la gramática y las partes escritas que hay que preparar, en la parte oral que en Cambridge tiene lugar con un compañero, en el Trinity no.
Así que la pregunta del millón de dólares es ¿cuál es mejor? Puede parecer que nos lavamos las manos o que no nos mojamos en nuestras apuestas, pero… creemos que ambas opciones ofrecen varios puntos fuertes y débiles que ninguno cubre en solitario ala hora de evaluar las capacidades bilingües de los estudiantes. Cambridge parece querer hacer más cortos sus exámenes cada pocos años. Con los nuevos cambios para el 2015 ha recortado la parte gramatical del Use of English y el Reading y los exámenes de unos y otros cada vez se asemejan más.
Al final, depende de tus prioridades: gramática frente a escritura (lo cual es un poco absurdo porque no existe una cosa sin la otra), o escuchar frente a presentar una conversación y mantener una discusión.
Cualquier examen te servirán a largo plazo, lo realmente importante es la continua tarea que nunca acaba: continuar aprendiendo inglés. ¡Buena suerte!
Differences Between Trinity and Cambridge
If we get past the debate as to which is more recognized, and leave out the alphabet soup list of the other myriad of exams that are even better known outside of Europe such as TOEFL and IELTS; let us examine a few of the differences between the ones that seem en vogue at the moment here in sunny Valencia, Trinity and Cambridge.
The Cambridge exams, which include the PET and First Certificate, are the popular kid at school; everyone wants to sit at THAT table. Trinity is the offbeat hipster that has a smaller but devoted following. First off, they both are recognized throughout Europe and beyond and the titles awarded are supposedly for life. I add the caveat ¨supposedly¨, because some potential employers may require an updated version if these were obtained ages ago during the Renaissance. Beyond that, what do you need to know?
The ISE (Integrated Skills in English) of Trinity has various levels and the ISE 1 and ISE 2 would be their exams that are the equivalent to the PET and FCE of Cambridge. These would be the B1 and B2 exams which are now required throughout Spain.
Both sets of exams test various skills such as writing, reading, speaking, listening and the DREADED, grammar. However, the Cambridge is the longer of the two and especially at the B2 and beyond levels (C1 or C2) there is a much higher priority given to integrated grammar and listening tasks. In the FCE there are 4 grammar and the equal amount of listening parts; while with the ISE 2 there are no specific listening or grammar sections, as these skills are evaluated in the writing and speaking portions of this test. In higher levels of ISE there are listening assignments.
At the same time, Trinity appears to have a much higher emphasis on writing and conversational functions. At the ISE 2 grade the student is expected to complete a 3 part portfolio at home and later a 2 part controlled written exam as well. In addition, with the ISE you prepare a topic discussion that will result in a lengthy conversation with the examiner. Besides length, grammar and writing differences, the speaking portion of the Cambridge is taken with a partner and the Trinity is not.
So onto the million dollar (I´m North American) question. Which is better? This may sound like a cop out or that I am hedging my bets, but…… I think both offer various strengths and weaknesses and neither alone will convert or (at the lower levels) assess the students’ bilingual capacities. The Cambridge appears to be getting shorter every few years and trims away a bit at its reading and Use of English (grammar) sections and the exams appear to be resembling each other more. In the end, it depends on your priorities: grammar vs writing (which is silly because one does not exist without the other), listening vs presentation and discussion. Either exam will do in the long run, the main task is the never ending process of English learning. Good luck!!!!!!
